#Honourpoint pays tribute to Lt Gautam Gurung, Sena Medal, on his 27th 'Balidan Diwas'.
ποΈ Though the Kargil War had officially ended, the Line of Control remained volatile with frequent enemy shelling. On 04 August 1999, while deployed in the Tangdhar sector, Lt Gautam Gurung's post came under intense artillery fire. One of the forward bunkers suffered a direct hit, leaving several soldiers critically injured.
βοΈ Without a moment's hesitation, Lt Gautam Gurung rushed through relentless shelling to rescue his wounded comrades. Displaying exceptional courage and complete disregard for his own safety, he carried the injured to safety even after being struck by shell splinters. Despite suffering grievous injuries, he continued the rescue operation until he could no longer carry on.
ποΈ Evacuated to a military medical facility, Lt Gautam Gurung succumbed to his injuries on 05 August 1999. For his conspicuous gallantry, selfless devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal. At just 26 years of age, he embodied the finest traditions of the Indian Army. Jai Hind!
